The Challenge

Petróleos Sudamericanos S.A., an energy company with more than 30 years of experience in oil and gas exploration and production, needed to replace an existing dry gas transportation pipeline in Catriel, Río Negro, Argentina.

The previous carbon steel pipeline had been in service for many years and was showing signs of corrosion and wear. To ensure operational continuity and improve system reliability, the client required an alternative capable of transporting treated methane gas, 100% dry, under operating conditions of 6 kg/cm² pressure, a temperature of 30°C / 86°F, and a flow rate of 40,000 m³/day.

In addition to material resistance, the project required an efficient installation process with fewer joints and shorter field execution times.

The Solution

For this project, 2,900 m / 9,514 ft of 110 mm, Class 10 Pexgol pipe were installed for dry gas transportation.

Thanks to its flexibility, low weight, and availability in long sections, Pexgol made it possible to complete the installation and pneumatic pressure test in just three days. Only six joints were required along the entire 2.9 km / 1.8 mi pipeline, significantly reducing critical points and improving network safety.

Pexgol’s corrosion resistance, ease of handling, and long service life made it an ideal solution for replacing the existing metallic pipeline.

This was the contractor’s second project using Pexgol. After gaining experience with the material during the first installation, the contractor selected Pexgol again due to its ease of installation and operational advantages over traditional piping solutions.
